The Concrete Star

Paul Wallach – Art That Creates Space

Born in New York in 1960 and now based in Paris, artist Paul Wallach creates works that make lightness and balance tangible. Using materials such as wood, plaster, metal, or fabric, he forms delicate sculptures that seem to float between wall and space – quiet, precise, and poetic.

His well-known work “Down to the Ground”, the large white star on Salzburg’s Krauthügel, has found a new home on the grounds of Hotel Gut Brandlhof. Here, a new place of encounter is emerging – between art, nature, and architecture.

Wallach’s works invite us to pause, shift perspectives, and experience space anew – serene, powerful, and in harmonious dialogue with their surroundings.

Art Figures

Raphael Gschwandtl – Expression in Wood

Wood sculptor Raphael Gschwandtl from Maria Alm combines masterful craftsmanship with a keen sense of form and character. His works are created from local wood – authentic, nature-inspired, and marked by a distinctive personal style.

For Hotel Gut Brandlhof, Raphael Gschwandtl has created three impressive wooden sculptures representing the hotel’s three guest types: Business, Sport, and Wellness. Each figure embodies its own attitude and energy – from dynamic to focused to calm and balanced.

In addition, Raphael Gschwandtl carved the summit cross of the Schönfeldspitze, another testament to his mastery of wood and his ability to unite symbolism and landscape.

Crafted with great attention to detail and respect for the material, the sculptures blend harmoniously into the surroundings of Hotel Gut Brandlhof. They reflect the spirit of the house – powerful, human, and inviting.
